At this point in the story if you have not read Jorge Luis Borges’ landmark essay on the translators of the Thousand and One Nights (entitled The Translators of the Thousand and One Nights) I must tell you to go seek it out and enlighten yourself forthwith. It’s not essential to have read it in order to follow the thread of Morimi’s recursive narrative, per se, but the tale of The Tropics is ultimately the tale of the Nights, refracted through what must be to many of you a somewhat familiar lens, the sum of which I hope perhaps disingenuously is more than its parts.
